More Filipino women are becoming entrepreneurs due to the global crisis

The global economic crisis has brought different effects on different people, some choose to be negative about it and wallow in the pool of pessimism and self pity, while saw it as an opportunity to strive harder and get something going.

Fortunately, for the Filipino women, the second option seems to be the popular choice. Because more and more Filipina are becoming entrepreneurs due to the global crisis. This is based on the study conducted by the non-government organization (NGO) Women Entrepreneurship (WE) Program.

In their studies, WE reports that majority or 55 percent of women entrepreneurs are 30 to 39 years old; 52 percent are single; 42 percent belong to the “broad middle” class; and a majority or 64 percent were employed prior to starting their own businesses.

It only shows that entrepreneurship has transcend age, social class, financial capability, education background and other factors that were used to be considered as limiting for them to succeed.

Senator Manny Villar Jr., an advocate of entrepreneurship, said that there is a silver lining for women in the global economic slowdown, in reference to the result of the survey. “The rising unemployment and increasing number of layoffs is forcing people to put up their own business. Many, including retrenched overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), are using their redundancy pay as capital for small business,” Villar added.

Because of this, Villar is urging to government to come up with more programs and initiatives that would introduce accessible support mechanisms for entrepreneurs. He added that this can also be a source of women empowerment as women can support themselves and their children as they contribute to the family’s income. Women OFWs who will be having their own business would mean that they won’t have to be away from their family anymore.

Villar said that small-and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) need support as much as the big companies, noting that SMEs started by entrepreneurs can contribute significantly in pulling the country out of an economic slowdown.
